Tax bills for the current calendar year are mailed in October of each year. Tennessee law does not require the mailing of tax notices. Owners of property are presumed to know that taxes are due without personal notice. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the responsibility of payment, nor is this a reason for penalty and interest charges to be canceled if the tax bill becomes delinquent.

The City's current property tax rate is $1.23 per 100 assessment.
Taxes are due and payable from the first of October through the last day of February. Starting March 1, penalty and interest will be accrued.
The Montgomery County Property Assessor sends the City a tax file with every owner on record, meaning the person who owned the property on January 1st of that year. The City then generates tax bills based on the file that the Montgomery County Property Assessor sends. We encourage owners of properties to always check their closing documents to see who is responsible for the payment of the taxes. Regardless of who is responsible for paying the taxes, the property can still be ultimately sold at a tax auction if the taxes remain delinquent and unpaid.
Beginning March 1st, taxes will be considered delinquent and will start to accrue monthly interest at a rate of 1.5% per month, or 18% annually. This amount is added to the tax bill. After taxes have been delinquent for one year, the City of Clarksville then turns the taxes over to the Delinquent Tax Attorney. City Hall shares a building with U.S. Bank. Free parking is available on the Public Square side of the City Hall building. There is also a night deposit located to the left of the doors on the City Hall/U.S. Bank building for secure drop off.
The City of Clarksville mails a copy of each tax bill to the owner on file as of January 1. It is the owner’s responsibility to forward the tax bill to their mortgage company. Also, it’s important to know whether your taxes are paid for through an escrow account, to avoid double payment of taxes by both the owner and the mortgage company.
It is the practice of the Finance and Revenue Department to refund any overpayment to the party to pay the taxes second, or last. For example if your mortgage company sends us payment for your taxes in December and you mail a payment in February, your money will be refunded to you.
The City will refund the overpayment to the party to pay second, or last. In this case the money would be refunded to your mortgage company, then you would need to contact your mortgage company to discuss your refund.
We accept property tax payments online. There is a 2.5% fee to pay by e-check or a credit/debit card. This fee is charged by our credit card processor and does not provide any monies to the City. Two separate charges will appear on your statement; one for the taxes paid and the other for the processing fee (PaymentUs is the vendor).

There are two different types of Tax Relief. There is Tax Relief for Elderly or Disabled Homeowners and Tax Relief for Disabled Veterans and Widow(er)s. For more information on how to qualify for tax relief, please visit the Montgomery County Trustee’s website or call our office at 931-645-7436.
Applications for the tax relief program are available at both the Montgomery County Trustee’s office as well as the City of Clarksville’s Finance and Revenue Department. For first time applicants, you will only need to sign up at the City or County offices, not both.
If you’re approved for tax relief based on your age or a non-military related disability, each year you will receive a voucher with both your County and City tax bills. You will need to bring all of your income information to the City of Clarksville with your City of Clarksville tax relief voucher. If you’re approved for tax relief based on your veteran status, you will need to submit your completed and signed vouchers to the City and County, respectively. Your submission of your City voucher can be done in person or by mail.
It is imperative that each tax relief recipient submit their voucher, along with all required information, each year to both the County and the City. The State of Tennessee uses these submitted vouchers to remit payment for the covered portion of your property taxes.
