REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Criminal Activity - The Peace Officer Standard and Training Commission of Tennessee may consider a waiver from pre- employment requirements relating to criminal activity on an individual basis and depending on the circumstances excluding felony charge or domestic violence.
  • Possess a valid drivers license
  • Be a Citizen of the United States
  • Honorable Discharge from the Armed Forces if prior military
  • Completely fill out an application for employment
  • Be able to pass an extensive background investigation, polygraph, and drug screen

NOTE: POLICE OFFICERS (PATROL DIVISION) WORK TWELVE (12) HOUR SHIFTS (NIGHTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS).

Remember, BOTH the application and the Authorization for Release of Information must be notarized as indicated on each of the forms.

Applications will be accepted year round at the Tennessee Career Center . If you can't bring your application to the Career Center , you may mail it to Career Center , 350 Pageant Lane , Clarksville , TN 37040 . Address it to the attention of the Clarksville Police Department Recruitment Officer.

TESTING AND EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

All parts of the testing process are pass/fail.

The applicant begins with a physical agility test. The physical agility test is a 400 yard obstacle course that consists of a four foot fence, a seven foot chain link fence (or a six foot wooden fence) a balance beam, a ditch to jump, and a 165 pound mannequin drag. Applicants have three minutes to complete the agility course.

The second phase of the process is a standardized written test. This test measures reading comprehension, writing skills and math skills. There is also a personality assessment. A score of 70% or better is needed to pass.

The third phase is an oral review board which consists of Supervisors and Officers.

The fourth phase consists of an extensive background investigation.

The fifth phase is an interview with two members of the Command Staff.

The final phase is an interview with the Chief of Police.

The Chief of Police selects the applicants that will be given a conditional offer of employment. This job offer is contingent upon the applicant's successfully completing a physical exam, a drug screen, psychological exam, and a polygraph test.

 

UPON EMPLOYMENT THE CLARKSVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING TRAINING

PHASE 1 is a four week in-house training program that will help you become accustomed to the Department. You will be provided instruction in firearms, policy and procedures, chemical weapons, impact weapons, DUI enforcement and other areas.

PHASE 2 is a ten week Basic Police School conducted at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy in Donelson , TN , near Nashville . Completion of these ten weeks provides you with a certification from the State of Tennessee . If you have a certification from another state, you may be eligible to "challenge" the P.O.S.T. test. If you are eligible and pass this challenge, you do not attend the ten week school.

PHASE 3 is a 14 week period where recruits are assigned to a Field Training Officer. After successful completion, you are assigned a shift and start solo patrols.
